2008 LYRA Boat of the Year Selection, by Bob Porter:  "In 2008 sixty yachts competed in the Lake Yacht Racing Association's annual Regatta, course racing event, and thereby met the first qualification for Boat of the Year. Of those sixty, the following thirteen yachts competed in at least two other tier I events and met the second requirement to be considered for Boat of the Year honors: Gruntled, Manitou Express, Margaritaville, Mullet, Night Owl, Out of the Blue, Road Trip
Raison D' etre, Seajay, Seaweed, That Damn Thing, Windabago,
and Zingara

Truly the standouts from this "short list" were Road Trip!, skippered by Cemeron Smith of the Whitby Yacht Club and competing in four Tier I events; Out of the Blue, skippered by John Doyle of the Rochester Yacht Club and competing in four Tier I events; Windabago, skippered by Steve Curr of the Whitby Yacht Club, and competing in four Tier I events; and finally, Mullet, skippered by Chris Warner/Chad Henry, of the Rochester Yacht Club and competing in six of the Tier I events.

Mullet, a Beneteau 40.7 from Rochester scored an overall victory in the Freeman Cup Long Distance Race and won her division (PHRF B) with four straight "bullets". Mullet also led her class at Youngstown Levels and won her division of the Lake Ontario 300 - finishing 2nd overall. Lake Yacht Racing Association is proud to present the LYRA 2008 Boat of the Year award to Chad Henry, Kris Werner and the crew of Mullet.  Robert S. Porter, LYRA Executive Committee"
From LYRA President, Pat Lymburner

It is a wonderful thing to be part of an organization like LYRA. The volunteers on our Executive Committee are really great people with a keen interest in advancing our desire to increase the friendly competition between the north and south sides of our Lakes.

For 125 years that goal has evolved into an annual regatta that brings so much extra to an event. The international flavour is exciting and the opportunity to “mix it up” with new boats and crews is a tremendous way to assess your skills and maybe even learn (or teach) a few tricks. Of course, there is a plethora of exquisite trophies to compete for and it is a true honour to have your name beside all those who came before.

It is often said that the only way to get better is to compete against the best and when you are the best it is important that you continue until the newest “gunslinger” can take you down. This is one of those events where there will be a lot of good competition to test yourself against.

This year’s event promises to be an awesome experience at Royal Canadian Yacht Club, one of our founding members. The organizers are working hard to bring the best sailors to this great club for what promises to be lots of fun and excitement.

There have been rumours floating around that the “trapezoid” course would be used. Personally I think it would be a terrific opportunity to try something “new” but I am assured that this will not be the case. They want to celebrate the event in the “old way” as befitting her 125 year history and are even contemplating adding an Olympic course as one of the optional course designs.

The ambience, food, friends and parties are to be enjoyed at a Club that is set in a most unique urban setting. I am truly looking forward to it.

The future looks equally exciting as we prepare to go to Lake Erie in 2010 for only the second time in our history. Buffalo Yacht Club is already gearing up for their hosting of our event and it promises to be worth the trip to Buffalo.

Following that, in 2011, the event will be at Port Credit Yacht Club. They are also starting to get their planning underway and I know it will be a spectacular event as well (it is, after all, my home club).

The Oswego Yacht Club, one of the founding clubs of LYRA, has placed a bid for 2012 before the LYRA Executive and we are truly excited about that.
