LYRA Overall Regatta Champions

    Rules for Scoring and Awards

LYRA Regatta Champions in IRC, PHRF and One-Design:

1.     Qualification

1.1.  To qualify for the LYRA Regatta Champion in PHRF or IRC, a boat must race the Freeman Cup Long Course Race, the 2-Day Course Race Series and either the Centennial or Founder’s Race.

1.2.  A boat must compete in only one fleet (IRC or PHRF-LO) for all races needed to qualify in 1.1.

1.3.  To qualify for the LYRA Regatta Champion in One-Design, a yacht must race in a one-design class in the 2-Day Course Race Series and either PHRF, IRC or One-Design in the Freeman Cup Race (Long or Short Course) and either the Centennial or Founder’s Race.

1.4.  A one-design boat must compete in one handicap fleet only (PHRF-LO or IRC) in the distance races if her one-design class does not have its own start in those races.

1.5.  Boats racing in level rating and/or MORC divisions are ineligible for any of the Regatta Champion awards.

2.     Scoring

2.1.  The LYRA Regatta Champions in IRC, PHRF and One-Design fleets shall be determined using the widely recognized Cox-Sprague scoring method.

2.2.   A boat’s total score shall be her “percentage of perfection”, calculated by dividing her total points in division (summation of points for all races, times the weighting factor listed below) by the total points she would have earned if she’d won every race she started.

2.3   A weighting factor (multiplier) shall be applied in the calculations as follows:

= 0.5  for the Centennial or Founder’s Race

= 1.0  for the Freeman Cup Long Course Race

= 0.7 for the Freeman Cup Short Course Race

= 0.3  for each race in the Day Course Race Series

2.4   All races shall be scored (no throwouts).  The points shown in the last column of the Cox-Sprague points table shall be used for PMS, OCS, DNF and DSQ. The yachts with the highest percent perfection in the IRC, PHRF and One-Design fleets shall be the Regatta Champions, respectively.

2.5   If a boat competes in both the Centennial and Founders Races, the performance in only one of them will be used (whichever yields the higher points) in the summation of total points to determine a winner.

2.3   The LYRA Executive Committee reserves the right to not award one or more of the three Regatta Champion awards if, in it’s opinion, the performance of the yacht with the highest percent perfection is not commensurate with the “best in fleet” spirit of the awards. The decision of the LYRA Executive Committee is final and not subject to redress or protest.

3.      Awards

3.1    Special flags will be awarded to the IRC, PHRF and One-Design Regatta Champions.  In addition, the following LYRA perpetual trophies will be awarded:

Bamaan Trophy..................................................... LYRA Regatta Champion, IRC

Lake Ontario PHRF Trophy..................................................... LYRA Regatta Champion, PHRF-LO

Kay Heron Trophy..................................................... LYRA Regatta Champion, One-Design

3.2  If at all possible, these awards shall be presented at the annual LYRA Regatta as part of the Day Course Race awards presentation on the last day of the Regatta. If not, they will be presented at LYRA’s Annual General Meeting in the fall of that same year.

3.3  Perpetual trophies are to be returned to LYRA at or before the start of the LYRA Regatta the following year. Recipients of the above trophies assume full responsibility for their safekeeping, cleaning/polishing and return.
